Revenge of the 47 Ronin

On this day in 1702, 47 former retainers of the late Lord Asano enacted their revenge on the man said to behind the event that led to their Lord's execution, one Lord Kira. After that event, the 47 carried the head of the slain Lord Kiran some 10 km across Edo, which is now known as Tokyo, to Sengakuji, a Buddhist temple where their Lord was buried.
A re-enactment of this event occurs every year and the parade stops at Zojoji, a temple near where I'm staying.
